"Group of Rebel Leaders". |
Illustration of Louis Riel on horseback during the aborted Fenian raids of 1871, with a group of Metis and aboriginal people with guns and tomahawks. Lt. Governor Archibald asked Archbishop Tache to approach Riel for assistance from the Metis in the defense of Manitoba against the impending Fenian raids, even though Riel had been labeled a traitor for leading the Resistance of 1869 to 1870. The Metis man on the far right is wearing the typical sash and leggings. Note the different clothing. Dogs are also in the image. |

A Band Of 180 Highlanders (33 Families And 25 Single Men) Left Scotland Late In June 1773 Arriving In Nova Scotia On The Sailing Ship "Hector" With Rear Mast Fore- And- Aft Rigged And Other Masts Square-Rigged. The "Hector" Was An Old Dutch Vessel Not In The Best Condition. In A Storm Off Newfoundland She Was Driven Back So Far That It Took A Fortnignt To Recover The Lost Distance. Food And Water Ran Low During The 11-Week Crossing And Sickness Claimed 18 Lives. On September 15th, A Beautiful Day, A Fraser Piper Led The Way As Men Women And Children Waded Through The Shallow Water With Their Few Possessions. Because It Was Unlawful In Scotland Since 1745, The Highlanders Wore The Old But Cherished Kilts And Plaids In Honour Of The Occasion Of Landing At Pictou Harbour, Nova Scotia. A Man Is Standing With A Gun At The Site Of The "Reference Monument" Raised By David Thompson (British) On July 24 (Or 29), 1824, On The Most North Westerly Point Of Lake Of The Woods. The Surveyors Had Great Difficulty In Finding That Spot. This Site Was Designated By Treaty Of Ghent As Key To Boundary Between British North America (Canada) & The American States (Usa). The Site Was Endorsed By The Joint Boundary Commissioners On October 26, 1826. In The Formal Search By The Boundary Commission Of 1872, The Remnants Were Found In A Swamp On October 17, 1872 And The Famous Corner Was Commemorated As Shown Beside The Man. The Bushes At The Site Completely Surround And Tower Over The Man And The Monument Made Of Logs |

In The Back Of The Cart Could Be The Metis' Wife And Child. Note The Harness On The Ox. Metis Red River Cart Was Constructed Simply With Wooden Hubs And Axles That Were Never Greased Since Dust Would Gather In Greased Parts And Quickly Wear Down The Wooden Parts. At First The Wheels Were Made Of One Solid Piece; Later Spokes Were Used. The Wheels Were "Dished" For Greater Stability. The Squeal Of The Grinding Wood Axle And Hub Could Be Heard For Miles.Three Men Are Standing In The Doorways Of Stores |

A woman stands on the remains of the ancient aboriginal fish trap on the Roseau River, Manitoba. |
Here hundreds of aboriginals from as far east as Bismark, Ontario congregated every Spring to catch and smoke jacks, sturgeon, and catfish. This was an annual event every Spring, after the fish started coming downstream again after spawning. Six strong young men, stripped to the waist, were posted at the narrow neck of the "V" made by the dam. They clubbed the fish and kept clear the baskets situated there. The women gutted the fish and then smoked them on miles of poles. |

Aboriginal camp at Oxford House, Manitoba with a York Boat in the water fitted for sail, and to the right a person with an axe. |
The canoes are Western Woods Cree showing an Ojibway style influence in the protruding prows, which was often the case. The traditional Cree design had a straighter stem, more common for calm water areas. This same general model was shared with the Western Woods Cree, Swampy Cree, James Bay Cree, and the Montagnais. |

Buffalo Bones At Swift Current, Ready For Shipment To Fertilizer Factories In The East. In 1870, The Buffalo Could Be Numbered In The Millions. The Indians Believed The Supply To Be Inexhaustable, But The Demand For Hides, And The Introduction Of The Repeating Rifle By Europeans, Resulted In A Wanton Slaughter Which Reduced The Buffalo Numbers To Almost Extinction By1885 |
